Ohio: Fears Of Marijuana Monopoly Undercut Support For Legalization Measure

If a ballot measure says "legalization" on it, it's always good, right? RIGHT? Maybe not.

A proposal that could this November make Ohio the fifth state to legalize recreational marijuana is drawing some unusual opposition -- and it's coming from residents who support legalizing marijuana, reports Lewis Wallace at NPR.

Lots of liberals and old hippies don't like the monopoly aspect of the referendum. Samantha Van Ness, 25, said that while she's all for legalizing cannabis, she's dead set against the amendment that will be on November's ballot.

"I would rather take the minor misdemeanor fine than let someone have such a massive monopoly in my state," she said. And that's reflected statewide among many who have problems with the initiative and with the group, ResponsibleOhio, that's pushing it.

One of the biggest reasons why is that the initiative specifies just 10 locations in the state where growing marijuana would be allowed. And, guess what? Ten groups of investors already have those sites locked down, ladies and gentlemen.

Those same investors -- surprise, surprise! -- are sinking $20 million into the campaign to make sure their massively profitable monopoly comes to pass. "So in essence," reports NPR, "they are paying to try to amend the Ohio Constitution to grant themselves pot growing rights."

KayaShack-interior(KayaHoldings)

Kaya Holdings, Inc., which calls itself the first fully reporting U.S. public company to own and operate a vertically integrated medical marijuana dispensary and medical marijuana grow operation in the United States, on Wednesday confirmed that it has filed an application for an additional license to open its second Kaya Shack™ medical marijuana dispensary in Oregon.

The company, in a prepared statement, announced it "believes that its planned Kaya Shack™ Marijuana Superstore would support revenue-enhancing opportunities currently under development by the Company as well as those under consideration by the Oregon legislature, including potential early recreational sales by existing MMDs as early as early Fall 2015."

"Targeted to be open in 90 days or less to take advantage of potential early recreational sales currently under consideration by the Oregon Legislature, this location is to be launched as a Kaya Shack Marijuana Superstore," said Craig Frank, CEO of Kaya Holdings. "The first class space, with a footprint roughly three times the size of our first Kaya Shack MMD in Portland, was carefully chosen with an eye towards multiple usages to both enhance revenues and broaden branding opportunities.

"The design would also allow for both recreational and medical marijuana sales at the same location (subject to state and local approval), as well as a major profiling of certain proprietary Kaya Farms Grow products currently under development," Frank said.

CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s two-year "Weed" investigation exposed the new faces and incredible potentials of medical marijuana to the American public, and also highlighted the growing frustration, and anger around gaining access to medical marijuana.

In the third installment of his award winning series, WEED: The Marijuana Revolution – Gupta reports on a watershed moment in medical marijuana research that could change everything we know about the plant and it’s effects.

At last count, nearly half of the United States has legalized medical marijuana, enabling millions of Americans to treat everything from pain to glaucoma to epilepsy to cancer with a hit of medicinal weed. Yet science has not proven conclusively whether it’s safe and effective.

With marijuana still illegal federally, the roadblocks to research have been impenetrable - until now. Scientists around the U.S. are finally breaking down the walls put up by the government. Gupta gains exclusive access to their history-making research and their patients, as they try to unravel the mystery of marijuana.

WEED: The Marijuana Revolution will air on CNN Sunday, April 19th at 9 pm ET/PT.

Immediately following WEED 3,, the CNN Original Series High Profits will premiere at 10 p.m. ET/PT. High Profits follows two business-minded visionaries with a plan to franchise marijuana. Music legend Willie Nelson, now 81, plans to launch his own signature brand of marijuana called Willie's Reserve.

According to PR person Michael Bowman, a veteran hemp and cannabis lobbyist who serves as the new brand's spokesperson, Willie wants the signature cannabis strain to be a reflection of his passions, reports James Joiner at The Daily Beast.

"Ultimately, it's his," Bowman said. "But it was developed by his family, and their focus on environmental and social issues, and in particular this crazy War On Drugs, and trying to be a bright light amongst this trail as we're trying to extract ourselves from the goo of prohibition."

"Really he wants it, at the end of the day, to envelop what his personal morals and convictions are," Bowman said. "So from the store itself to how they'll work with suppliers and how things are operated, it's going to be very reflective of Willie's life. I think it's safe to say there will be stores that roll out in the states where marijuana has become legal," Bowman ventured.

According to Bowman, the stores will carry both signature strains grown under Willie's oversight, and other strains of cannabis as well. "There will be our own, and then there will be opportunities for other growers, who meet quality standards," he said.

"In the next calendar year there will be movement," Bowman said.
